How can I get singing opportunities with out things like American Idol?

I don’t know exactly where you live, but if you’re unwilling to move to industry hotspots (like Los Angeles or Nashville, depending on your genre of music), it would be difficult to ‘make it big’.
Try singing in local competitions such as county or state fairs, or sing at local clubs, to develop a local fan base. From there you could use local connections to make professional demo tapes or CDs to send to recording studios.
