There has only been one American Idol and you are looking at her. True genius in music requires passion that very few singers embody. Everything she sings is hers. This is especially significant if one knows the book. Celie says, Dear God, I’m here after Mister tells her that “she ain’t nothing, you black, you pore, you ugly, you a woman you ain’t nuthin’” Celie acknowledges the criticism and responds with “I’m here” Could any other AI winner sing this. I think not!

To me, she is the best singer to come out of American Idol. This and “Summertime” are the best performances in AI ever!

wonderful singer, bad clothes. Whats up with the chain? That doesnt go with the dress. Looks like she should be holding a 40 oz or something … lawd … This called for elegant formal attire. the dress looks like a slip.

I haven’t watched since the season Fantasia was on. I watched the one with “Paris” (the granddaughter of the gospel singer) was on it, but stopped when she lost. The singers on American Idol sound too SANITIZED, and dont’ look normal, in the face.

I think that comment wasn’t directed to this specific performance as much as her last album. I might be completely wrong, but that seems to make more sense. I do much prefer her first album to her second, but in both of them she was just Fantasia- not more, not less.

that’s not ‘hood. that is straight up gospel…she was ‘goin’ to church’ on that stage…that was just feeling the song.

That last comment is so uncalled for. This song is from The Color Purple – a musical about black people…whether she’s playing her role, or just being herself….there’s nothing wrong with being ‘hood’. let’s back off on the stereotypes.

I feel you on that sentiment. To me Fantasia’s interpretation of everything she sings is so intense. I usually have to take a nap after I listen to her because she pulls at all of my emotions. I actually traveled to New York 3 times to see her in the play she was phenomenal. I absolutely love her. But I was emotionally spent after every performance. I hear she has a new CD in the works can’t wait for that. Your comment made me smile.

This is actually my favorite of the times she performs this song, I think she’s in her best voice here, I even like it better than the Oprah performance. It’s raw and natural here, and absolutely perfect… brilliant.
